Within a few days, with the long-awaited Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics kicking off, and the Olympic flame once again lighting up, Beijing is to become the first city ever to have hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics in the world. Although there is no snow here in Bangladesh, there are still a few things about this Games that you might be interested to know.
再过几天，万众期待的2022年北京冬奥会即将拉开帷幕，奥运圣火将再次点燃。北京将成为世界上第一个举办过夏季和冬季奥运会的城市。虽然孟加拉国不下雪，但关于本届奥运会，你可能会有兴趣知道一些事情。
A Safe Olympic Games
一场安全的冬奥会
Naturally, professional medical teams and helicopters are ready to provide immediate rescue service for competitors in snow sports as usual. However, given the still severe and complicated global epidemic situation, it is surely a huge challenge for organizing the world’s largest comprehensive winter sports right now. After a meticulous preparation process, Beijing is now ready to present a healthy Olympic Games to the world. In order to curb possible spread of COVID-19 and ensure the safety of Olympic participants and the Chinese people, the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (BOCOG) has established an international working group with the IOC and the WHO. Drawing on China’s successful experience in the fight against COVID-19 and that of major international competitions held in the past and at present, BOCOG has published the Beijing 2022 Playbooks, which will be the guide to ensure a safe and secure Games for participants and the people of China.
专业的医疗团队和直升机已准备好为雪上比赛的健儿提供及时的救援服务。但除此之外，在当前全球疫情依然严峻复杂的形势下，举办世界上规模最大的综合性冬季运动会无疑是一个巨大挑战。经过精心安排，北京已准备好向世界提供一届安全的奥运会。为遏制新冠肺炎疫情的蔓延，确保奥运选手和中国人民的生命安全，北京奥组委与国际奥委会和世界卫生组织共同成立了工作组，借鉴中国抗击新冠肺炎疫情的成功经验以及举办重大国际赛事的成功经验，出版了《北京2022年冬奥会和冬残奥会防疫手册》（以下简称《防疫手册》），为广大参赛选手和中国人民确保一届安全、有保障的奥运会提供指导。
The regulations in the Playbooks, made in light of the latest scientific conclusions and expert guidance and in reference to the experience of other international events, are believed to be essential to mitigate the risks and impact of the pandemic and will be strictly followed. All Olympics-involved individuals should be fully vaccinated. A closed-loop management system will be put in place throughout the stay of all athletes, officials and other people associated with the Games.
根据最新科学结论和专家指导并参考其他国际赛事经验而制定的《防疫手册》对减轻新冠疫情的风险和影响至关重要，里面的各项规定将得到严格遵守。所有参与冬奥会的个人都应充分接种疫苗。在所有运动员、官员和其他与奥运会有关的人员参与冬奥会期间，将建立闭环管理系统。
Brian McCloskey, chair of the Beijing 2022 Medical Expert Panel, praised the effectiveness of the closed-loop system of the Games at a media conference on January 29th, and said that he believed in the safety of the Games. According to McCloskey, the target has never been zero cases but zero spread, to achieve which Beijing has built multiple layers of protection to prevent the COVID-19 virus from spreading into China through the Games.
1月29日，北京冬奥会医疗专家组首席专家布莱恩·麦克洛斯基在媒体发布会上赞扬北京冬奥会闭环管理系统的有效性，相信冬奥会是安全的，防疫目标不是零病例，而是零传播。为实现这一目标，北京建立了多层防护系统，防止新冠病毒通过奥运会传播到中国。
A Green Olympic Games

If a color is to chosen to represent the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, it must be green, since the Games has strictly implemented low-carbon management. Committed to holding a carbon-neutral Olympics, Beijing has made a valuable innovation and breakthrough: All venues are powered by renewable energy for the first time at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
如果要选择一种颜色代表北京冬奥会，那么一定是绿色。北京冬奥会严格执行低碳管理，承诺举办一届碳中和的奥运会。北京已取得宝贵的创新和突破：首次实现全部场馆100%绿电供应。
Environment-friendly refrigerants, instead of the harmful substance Freon, and carbon dioxide ice-making technology are used at Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics ice venues, which is the first time this low climate impact technology been used in China and at the Olympic Winter Games. The latest technology can save energy by more than 20 percent compared with traditional refrigeration methods.
对环境友好的制冷剂将取代有害物质氟利昂，当下冬季运动场馆最先进、最环保的二氧化碳跨临界直冷制冰技术首次应用在北京冬奥会，该技术比普通制冷技术节能超20%。
The special designed low-carbon transportation system has been built to carry out carbon offsets. Energy-saving and clean-energy vehicles will account for 100 percent of all passenger cars and 85 percent of all the vehicles.

A Popular Olympic Games
一场大众化的冬奥会
Getting 300 million people involved in winter sports is a promise made by China in its bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games. As a country with a vast territory and diverse natural conditions, winter sports used to be confined mainly to the northern parts of China with abundant snow and ice resources. Surprisingly, I found that even in my hometown Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province where the temperature is similar to Bangladesh these days, many newly-built winter sport venues are available. Thanks to the innovation brought by economic and technological development, winter sports has been easily accessible and affordable nationwide due to the increasingly mature ice-making technology. Also, ecological snow-making technologies have prompted booming indoor and outdoor ski resorts in southern China.
让三亿人上冰雪是中国申办冬奥会的承诺。作为一个地域广阔、自然条件多样的国家，冬季运动以往都在具有丰富冰雪资源的北方开展。但我惊讶的发现，甚至在我家乡云南省昆明市，这段时间当地温度与孟加拉国相似，都有许多新建冬季运动场馆。受益于发达的科技带来成熟的制冰技术，冬季运动在全国范围推广开来。与此同时，环保的制雪技术促进中国南方室内外雪场的蓬勃发展。
Nowadays, winter sports have become a leisurely and fashionable entertainment among the Chinese people. According to statistics released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics on 12th January, over 346 million Chinese people have participated in winter sports since Beijing won the bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, which means we have hit the target of engaging 300 million people in winter sports. Now in China, winter sports have a solid foundation. China’s promotion of the popularization and development of ice and snow sports will surely add a new aspect to global winter sports.
眼下冬季运动在中国已然成为休闲和时尚的娱乐活动。根据中国国家统计局1月12日发布的数据，自从北京申冬奥成功后，中国冰雪运动参与人数达到3.46亿人，“带动三亿人参与冰雪运动”的目标已达成。现在中国冬季运动拥有坚实群众基础，中国促进冰雪运动大众化发展将为全球冰雪运动带来新面貌。
A Sustainable Olympic Games

Beijing’s vision of hosting sustainable Winter Olympics is materializing in a grand way, and we hope the venues and projects could keep promoting sports and social and economic development after the sporting gala closes.
北京举办可持续冬奥会的愿景十分宏大，希望在冬奥会结束后，所有场馆能继续促进体育、经济和社会的发展。
On 13th January, BOCOG released its Pre-Games Sustainability Report, which shows that except for the newly built National Speed Skating Oval and Big Air Shougang, all other venues in Beijing are legacies from the 2008 Olympics. The highlight is not about refurbishing old venues and turning them into something totally different. It’s about diversifying the functions of those venues and making them compatible for various purposes while expanding their businesses.
1月13日，北京冬奥组委发布《北京冬奥会可持续发展报告（赛前）》，报告显示，除了国家速滑馆“冰丝带”和首钢滑雪大跳台是新建馆，其他场馆都实现了由2008年北京夏季奥运会到冬季奥运会的改造。这些改造并非简单的功能转换，而是在保留原有使用功能的同时，注入新的冬季运动使用功能，使这些场馆的功能多样化，在扩大功能的同时兼容各种用途和今后的运营。
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said, this report shows that Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics recognizes its responsibility to integrate sustainability principles throughout all stages of the Games’ preparation.

On 25th January, President Xi Jinping met with President Thomas Bach and pointed out that, after more than six years of preparations and now with everything falling into place, the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022 will be held on schedule as promised. This is the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic that a comprehensive global sporting event is held as scheduled. President Bach, impressed by the outstanding venues, thorough COVID-19 countermeasures and advanced concept of sustainability, expressed full confidence that the strong measures taken by China will ensure the delivery of a safe, smooth and successful Games.

A United Olympic Games
一场团结的冬奥会
The Winter Games are a stage for athletes, not a runway for politics. The Beijing Winter Olympics is going to be a united Olympic Games. On December 2nd 2021, the 76th session of the UN General Assembly adopted a consensus resolution, co-sponsored by 173 member states, for a truce for Beijing 2022. The Group of 20, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation also affirmed support for the Games in joint declarations and communiqués.
冬奥会是运动员的舞台，而不是政客的跑道。北京冬奥会将是一场团结的奥运会。2021年12月2日，第76届联合国大会协商一致通过由中国和国际奥委会起草的奥林匹克休战决议，173个会员国共提该决议。二十国集团、中非合作论坛、上海合作组织等多边机制也发出支持北京冬奥会的强音。
Its unity could also been seen from lots of international dignitaries attending the opening ceremony and relevant activities. There are 25 heads of state, heads of government, members of the royal family and 7 heads of international organizations attending the Games, including President Vladimir Putin of Russia, President Andrzej Duda of Poland, President Alberto Fernández of Argentina, Presidents from the five Central Asian countries, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, Prime Minister L. Oyun-Erdene of Mongolia, National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-Seug of the Republic of Korea, President Thomas Bach of the IOC, Secretary-General António Guterres of the UN, and Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus of the WHO and so on.

We believe the universal sports spirit will bring together peace, solidarity, hope and courage to light the way for humankind to join hands in fighting the Covid-19 pandemic and provide a stage for building a community with a shared future for humankind. The Olympic flame will be dancing to the drumbeat of the upcoming Chinese Year of the Tiger in a few days. We hope that all Olympians will excel themselves in the competition like soaring dragons and leaping tigers in Beijing, and the international Olympic cause will move forward by leaps and bounds and contribute vitality to realizing world peace and development.
再过几天，北京冬奥会的圣火将伴随着中国农历虎年新春的鼓点熊熊燃烧。我们期待全球冰雪健儿在北京“龙腾虎跃”，希望国际奥林匹克事业“虎虎生威”，为实现世界和平发展贡献“虎虎生机”。
