27 July 2021
Your Excellency Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ishan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports,
Dr. Siti Norkhalbi binti Haji Wahsalfelah, Deputy Permenant Secretary of Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports,
Mr. Ti Eng Hui, CEO of Baiduri Bank,
Dr. Muhammad Firdaus bin Abdul Rahman, President of Brunei-China Friendship Association,
Ms. Huifong Ng, founder of Huifong’s Art Gallery,
Distinguished guests, media friends,
Ladies and gentlemen,
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Brunei. It was a unique insight that Huifong’s Art Gallery has decided to hold the Brunei-China Art and Visual Culture Festival. I would like to thank Dato Aminuddin Ishan for attending the event as Guest of Honor and offering invaluable support. My thanks go to Beijing People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Foreign Affairs Office of Nanjing Municipal People’s Government, Brunei-China Friendship Association and Baiduri Bank for their assistance as the Supporting Partners and Sponsors.
Thanks to the joint efforts of the governments and peoples from the two countries, China-Brunei bilateral relations have made considerable progress since the establishment of diplomatic relations 30 years ago. His Majesty the Sultan has visited China 12 times. During H.E. President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Brunei in 2018, two heads of state elevated the bilateral relations to Strategic Cooperative Partnership. Political mutual trust has seen constant consolidation. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, the two countries have rendered sympathy and support to each other, with mutual trust and friendship further enhanced. In February this year, China donated Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines to Brunei, making Brunei the fourth country to receive China’s vaccine donations, though China was faced with large domestic demand. We take pleasure in being able to help a good friend in his time of need. The support between China and Brunei is tangible, and concern sincere.
Culture and arts play the role as a bridge that connects hearts and emotions between peoples, and a bond that helps with better understanding and deeper trust between countries. The cultural and arts exchanges between China and Brunei are very active. The Honorable Minister Dato Aminuddin Ishan attended the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations held in Beijing in 2019. Exchange of visits between Chinese and Bruneian painters were very successful. Chinese performance troupes visited Brunei many times in recent years. All these exchanges of ideas and experiences played a positive role in promoting cultural exchanges between China and Brunei.
The Brunei-China Art and Visual Culture Festival is a good platform for cultural exchanges, and for mutual learning and communication between artists from both countries. A variety of artistic forms will be brought to the public in this two-day event, such as photography, dancing, poetry, traditional music instruments, martial arts, and also dialogues between Chinese and Bruneian artists. The five Chinese artists participating in the dialogues are from Beijing Painting Academy, which was founded in 1957 and is the largest professional painting academy in China. I believe that this festival will make us feel the spiritual beauty brought by cultural exchanges from the bottom of our hearts. Let me conclude by wishing the Brunei-China Art and Visual Culture Festival a complete success.
