【1】责任，义务

 

【例】The underwriters refused to take any liability for the losses.

承保人对损失拒绝承担责任。

 

【2】负债，债务

 

常用复数形式。例如：assets and liabilities（资产与债务），但现代英语中使用单数形式者亦不乏其例。

【例】We find it necessary to ask you if you will allow us an extra few weeks in which to clear the current liability.

我们认为需要向你方询问清楚，你方能否另行宽限我们数周来清偿流动负债。

 

liable

【1】有（法律）责任的，有义务的

 

常用作表语或补语。

①后面接用for。

【例】We cannot hold ourselves liable for the claim for breakage.

我们对破碎方面的索赔不负责任。

 

②后面可接用不定式。

【例】Your designs for the printed shirtings must reach us 45 days before the stipulated month of shipment, otherwise we are not liable to be punctual in making delivery.

贵方印花平布的花型必须在规定的装船月份之前45天寄达我方，否则我方不能保证按时交货。

 

【2】易于，易遭受

 

常用作表语。

①后面接用介词to +名词。句式：be liable to + n。

【例】Such an article as the one under Contract No. 2224 is liable to pilferage at the port of transhipment.

第2224号合同项下这类货物，易于在转船口岸被偷窃。

 

②后面接用不定式。句式：be liable to do sth。

【例】The consignment is liable to be spoiled if the weather is wet.

如果天气潮湿，该货就容易损坏。

丰富的，大的

 

【例】We have a liberal supply of soft drinks in the market.

我们市场上软饮料供应充足。
