柏拉图之吻

有位读者问我：“Platonic kiss（柏拉图之吻）是什么意思？与Platonic love（柏拉图之爱）有什么关系？”

首先，我们要弄清楚 Platonic love 的意思。Platonic love is a type of love that is chaste and non-sexual. The term is named after Plato, who philosophized about the nature of love. （柏拉图之爱是一种纯洁的非性的爱。这个词是以柏拉图命名的，他探究思考了爱的本质。）

以此类推，我们知道：Platonic kiss is a type of kiss that is chaste and nonsexual. It is actually a short kiss on the cheek for greeting.（柏拉图之吻是一种纯洁的非性的吻。它实际上是面颊上短促一吻，用于招呼。）

吻是人类表达情感的一种方式。在不同的文化中，吻表达不同的情感，具有不同的含义。

取决于文化和语境，吻可以表达爱的感情（love）、激情（passion）、浪漫（romance）、性吸引力（sexual attraction）、性冲动（sexual arousal）、爱慕（affection）、敬意（respect）、致意（greeting）、友情（friendship）、和平与好运（peace and good luck），等等。差不多每种情感和场合都可以用吻来表示，像打招呼和告别时在面颊上的吻、妈妈在孩子前额上的吻，以及亲热和激情的接吻。

在表达情感时，吻大体分为夫妻（husband and wife）、情侣（lovers）和伴侣（partners）之间的“性的吻”（sexual kiss）或“浪漫的吻”（romantickiss）, 以及亲属（relations）、朋友（friends）或熟人（close acquaintances）之间的“非性的吻”（non-sexual kiss）或“纯洁的吻”（chaste kiss）。

有时，吻与情感无关，而与礼仪和宗教仪式有关，是一种礼仪性的、正式的或象征性的示意动作，表示忠诚、尊敬或圣礼。例如：①When the new American President took the presidential oath of office in the president’s inauguration, he kissed the Bible/the Book.（当美国新总统在就职仪式上进行就职宣誓时，他吻了《圣经》。）②When the Pope presents his hand in such a manner that would allow people to kiss the papal ring, the Catholics can kiss it to show that they respect his office and submit to his authority.（当教皇伸出手，示意允许人们吻教皇戒指时，天主教徒们可以亲吻他的戒指以示尊重他的职位，顺从他的权威。）

英语中有形形色色的吻。kiss本来是用唇部接触对方，可是有种用睫毛接触对方面部的kiss，叫作butterfly kiss（直译为“蝴蝶之吻”）。要想给人一个蝴蝶之吻，需要把脸贴近对方的脸，这样你们的眼睛就几乎碰上了，然后快速眨眼，对方就会感到好像被蝴蝶纤细的翅翼亲吻一样。例如：The girl worked her eyelashes and made butterfly kisses on her father’s cheeks. （这个女孩闪动睫毛，轻拂她父亲的面颊。）

kiss本来是零距离接触，但也可以隔空向对方送air kiss、flying kiss或blown kiss（飞吻）。例如：On the stage, the singer threw a flying kiss at the audience.（在舞台上，这位歌手给了观众一个飞吻。）

kiss不仅可以表达情感，还可以救命。kiss of life直译为“生命之吻”，指“口对口的人工呼吸”，还有“起死回生的行动”或“恢复元气的事物”的喻义。例如：①The nurse saved the old dying man with the kiss of life. （这位护士用口对口的人工呼吸挽救了这个奄奄一息的老人。）②This loan is the kiss of life that our company needs badly.（这笔贷款是我们公司急需的救命钱。）

与kiss of life意思相反的是kiss of death（死亡之吻），是“致死的吻”，比喻“貌似有利却导致失败的行动”。kiss of death源自《圣经》的Judas kiss（犹大之吻）。Judas原是耶稣的门徒，为了30块银元出卖了耶稣。他以亲吻耶稣为暗号，让人抓住耶稣。Judas kiss比喻“背叛”或“口蜜腹剑的伪善”。

例如：①Your poor English was the kiss of death for the failure in getting that job.（你的英语太差，导致你未能得到那份工作。）②His treacherous act was, so to speak, a Judas kiss.（他的背叛行为可以说就是“犹大之吻”。）

法国人以浪漫著称，有自己独特的亲吻方式。French kiss译为“法式热吻”或“法式湿吻”。

生活在北极地区的因纽特人，也就是爱斯基摩人，用碰鼻子亲吻，称为Eskimo kiss（爱斯基摩式亲吻）。这是因纽特人向所爱之人问好的极富柔情的打招呼方式。
