注意：

stumble暗喻这段男女关系并不顺利，毕竟Frieda是Klamm的女友。

人没有对某种不可摧毁之物的持久信任就无法生存，哪怕一直不知道自己信任什么，也不知道天下有不可摧毁之物。

注意：

divide的逻辑宾语是humanity（人类），而division是前文borrow的宾语。

人之智性

注意：

that which即what，condition此为及物动词之绝对用法， 即condition everything else。叔本华此段论死亡，主旨在于kernel与principle不变，而phenomenon变，life虽灭而will不灭。

 

8. In this context [. . .] suffering as merit.

注意：

在卡夫卡看来，苦难是人类成长之必经形式，故公平（即补偿苦难）、惧怕苦难、赞颂苦难皆无意义。

 

9. relativizes

注意：

因指出不仅基督为人类受难，人类亦为基督受难，有此双向之关系，故用此动词。

 

10. the symbolic displaying [. . .] in the individual

注意：

弥赛亚之来临，乃体现在每一个人如基督般承担人类的苦难，故弥赛亚实复活于每一个人身上。

 

11. freed from its opposite

注意：

opposite即下文解释之confinement。

 

12. fictional inventions

注意：

即卡夫卡创作的小说。

 

13. thinking in images

注意：

用意象思考，即文学创作，与thinking in concepts（用概念思考，即哲学思辨）相对，前者对思想水平的要求未必没有后者高（no less rigorous）。

因太费脑筋而枯燥乏味。
