注意：
① 比较nag与complain。
② reminder和counterpart这类词，汉译得看上下文，灵活处理。
2. The father bears the scar of a war wound on his thigh.
父亲一条大腿上是战时留下的伤疤。
注意：
bear与scar的搭配。
3. chide him for malingering
责备他装病怠工
注意：
① chide的同义词辨析，详见《韦氏大学》11版reprove条。chide和reprove都是语气缓和的，rebuke和reprimand则严厉。
② 工作偷懒，叫slack；磨洋工、开小差，英国口语用skive；磨洋工，美国口语叫goof off；工作不投入，是not pull one’s weight；压根不工作，是not do a stroke of work——《朗文活用》是宝书啊！
4. its blatant sexual character
其毫不掩饰的涉黄性质
注意：
关于blatant，还是要看《朗文活用》，比较flagrant（别读成fragrant）和glaring。
5. The boy seems to have been castrated and feminized, perhaps rendered androgynous or removed from sexual differentiation.
这男孩看上去已遭阉割，女性化了，也许成了阴阳人，或者已无性别区分之可能。
注意：
① render的用法。
② 译文“已”字，照应to have been。
③ androgynous里，andro-是“男性”，“-gyn(e)”是女性。想想polyandry和misogyny是什么意思。参考hermaphrodite——这词还要高大上，有爱神和爱马仕呢。

（这一段非常重口味，但描写生动至极。建议心理承受能力强大如我者背诵。我就不翻译啦。）
注意：
① shades是“ 色度”，谓此腐肉之玫瑰红也有深浅之分。
② finely-grained一词，令人作呕——密集物恐惧症（trypophobia）有木有！
③ welling unevenly让我想起趵突泉。
④ a mine at the surface应为“露天矿”。
⑤ Thus from the distance. 指前面几句是有一定距离的观察，并非凑近了看（a closer look）。
⑥ be held/stuck fast是词组，fast是副词，意为“牢牢地”而非“快速地”。
⑦ you are past helping即“回天乏术”。
⑧ this flower in your side是your great wound的同位语。
7. He remains secure from the sexual temptations of the physical world.
面对物质世界种种性诱，他始终不为所动。
注意：
① secure与from的搭配。
② physical这里不是“物理的”。
8. the extravagant display of erotic desire
性欲的过度展现
注意：
① erotic源于古希腊爱神之名Eros，多指文艺作品的“色情”，或伴有性兴奋的想法、感觉；春宫画、色情书、三级片等，统称为erotica。
② 这种display，令我想起唐人李义山咏史名句：“小怜玉体横陈夜，已报周师入晋阳。”（我儿时背的版本是“闻报边师入晋阳”啊）。
9. its overpowering affection which the speaker can hardly bear to resist
它那令说话者无法抵挡的浓情蜜意
注意：
① 区别affection与love、affection与affectation。
② bear在否定式中的应用。
10. It seeks to drag him down into its own physical corruption.
它想要把他拉过来，一起沉沦在肉体的腐恶之中。
注意：
drag sb. into sth. (e.g., mess, argument, war) 的用法。
11. the hateful and despicable world of the senses
可恶可鄙的感官世界
注意：
① hateful今天多表示arousing hate而非full of hate（此旧义也）。
② despicable与despise的读音。
③ 全部感官，合起来叫the senses，释家所谓“六根”或“六尘”。
12. invite such an interpretation
容易招致这样的阐释
注意：
invite这样的用法，多贬义，宾语可以是criticism、hostility、ridicule、trouble 等。encourage 有近义的用法，但是中性的。
