每天都有读者来信，说很喜欢“卡夫卡”这个系列。其实，每天也掉粉不少。
我处之泰然，因为十多年的从业经历告诉我，不少关注的背后，是希望得到“英（zuò）语（mèng）速（qù）成（ba）”的秘诀，而不是跟着我傻乎乎地一页一页读啊记啊。
第三章开始啦！
Chapter 3 Bodies (1)
1. the 19th century tendency to conceal the body under layers of clothing and distort its shape by corsetry
19 世纪那种用层层衣衫隐藏肉身、以紧身内衣扭曲（女性）形体的倾向
注意：
① 区别clothing、clothes、cloth，音也都要读准。
② corsetry 是集合名词，《韦氏大学》11 版解作underwear (as corsets, girdles, and brassieres) meant to shape a woman’s body。
2. The other side finds expression in constant complaints in his diary about[…].
另一方面体现在他日记里对……的频繁抱怨。
注意：
① find expression in sth.是词组，“体现在……”。
② 每逢3·15，都要想到complaint也可表示“投诉”。
3. express Kafka’s ambivalence towards his body and towards the body in general
表达卡夫卡对自己肉身和一般意义上的肉身都抱有矛盾心态
注意：
ambivalence与towards的搭配。形容词ambivalent 里，ambi-是“两者兼有”，-valent从拉丁语的valēre来，意思是to be of worth or strong，这valēre在英语里还有两个“阿凡达”：value和valo(u)r。
4. a large and unwieldy insect body
一个硕大笨重的昆虫躯体
注意：
比起反义词wieldy来，unwieldy常见多了。
5. Kafka’s prose is always surrounded by a penumbra of further suggestion.
围绕着卡夫卡的散文，总有一种暗示不断的晦明无定。
注意：
① prose这个“散文”，与essay不同，反义词是“韵文”，poetry。都不可数。
② penumbra是暗喻用法，很多词典不曾收录。另，请查umbra与umbrella的词源关系。
③ suggestion此处既不可数，则必非“建议”也。
6. laborious antics
煞费气力的滑稽动作
注意：
antics今天总是用复数，词源同antique。《牛津高阶》7版给出两条释义：(a) behaviour which is silly and funny in a way that people usually like (b) behaviour which is ridiculous or dangerous，令我感觉antics也成了一个Janus word。

原本轻而易举的任务
注意：
straightforward这里是easy to do的意思。
8. a decrepit old man
垂垂老者
注意：
人老或物旧，都可用decrepit 形容。人老而糊涂，用senile。
9. a festering wound
溃烂的伤口
注意：
wound有两个读音，你们都造吗？这里是“忘恩德”还是“无恩德”？
10. result from a nocturnal emission
源自夜间那个啥
注意：
《牛津高阶》4版有nocturnal emission这个词组，其他很多词典均未收录。生理卫生的内容，我就不多说了。主要是告诉大家，“夜间的”是nocturnal，“日间的”是diurnal。
11. a strange evolutionary throwback
奇怪的退化
注意：
还记得“退化”的那把梯子吗？
12. Georg is reduced to passive obedience before his father.
乔格只得在父亲面前言听计从。
注意：
① reduce的用法，类似的有sb. is reduced to tears/silence/begging in the street。
② passive 强调obedience 并非心甘情愿。
13. live like harem women
如穆斯林闺阁中的女眷（般生活富足）
注意：
harem的读音和地域色彩；有人把这词译作“后宫”。
14. bodily attrition
身体上的消耗
注意：
attrition的语体。
15. Kafka’s feminized men lose out in an Oedipal struggle with father figures.
卡夫卡笔下女性化的男子在与同性尊长的俄狄浦斯式斗争中，都败下阵来。
注意：
① lose out是词组。
② Oedipal的读音；恋母情结是the Oedipus complex，恋父情结是the Electra complex。oe在几百年前，都是合写作一个字母的，一如ae（还保留在音标里）和ft，叫作ligature（连字）。
