Speech by Consul General Zhao Jian at the “Shanghai: Safe Haven During the Holocaust” Reception

尊敬的格罗斯曼先生及夫人，

尊敬的Katten律师事务所主席Roger Furey先生，

各位来宾，女士们、先生们：

Ladies and Gentlemen,

 

很荣幸出席今晚的“上海：大屠杀中的安全避难所”主题招待会。感谢Katten律师事务所的邀请。感谢Katten律师事务所和其他主办方把发生在上海的这段感人至深的历史展现给人们。

It is an honor for me to attend tonight’s reception for the exhibition “Shanghai: Safe Haven During the Holocaust”. Thanks go to Katten for the kind invitation. I also would like to thank Katten and other organizers for presenting us with the exhibition of this touching story and important part of history between Chinese and Jewish people.

 

80多年前，当世界上很多地方都对遭受纳粹疯狂迫害、屠杀的犹太难民关闭大门的时候，善良的中国人民和上海这座包容的城市则向数以万计的犹太难民敞开怀抱，为他们提供了庇护生命的“诺亚方舟”。中国人民和犹太人民患难与共的故事令人感动。犹太民族的坚强勤奋令人感动。中国人民的善良与正直令人感动！

More than 80 years ago, when many parts of the world closed doors to Jewish refugees who were persecuted and massacred by the Nazis, the kind-hearted Chinese people and the inclusive city of Shanghai opened their arms to tens of thousands of Jewish refugees, provided them with this “Noah’s Ark”. The story of the Safe Haven in Shanghai is deeply moving. The perseverance and diligence of the Jewish people deserve our respect, so are the kindness and integrity of the Chinese people.

 

这段历史生动诠释了中国人民正直、善良、博爱、包容的民族精神。勤劳、善良、和平、和睦是中华民族5000年来一直追求和传承的理念，支撑着中华民族生生不息、薪火相传。尽管历史上遭受过种种苦难与磨难，但中华民族一直愿与世界上所有爱好和平的国家和民族和睦相处，交流互鉴，共同繁荣发展。无论遇到什么样的挑战，我们始终愿同各国人民同舟共济，共渡难关，共同创造美好生活。

The story of the Safe Haven in Shanghai has vividly demonstrated the national spirit of integrity, kindness, fraternity and inclusiveness of the Chinese people. Integrity, diligence, kindness, peace, and harmony are what Chinese people have always pursued for 5,000 years, passing on from one generation to the next. Despite all the sufferings and hardships, the Chinese people have always tried their best to uphold peace and justice, willing to work together with all peace-loving nations and to exchange and learn from each other and prosper together. No matter what challenges we may face, we are always committed to solidarity and cooperation, supporting and helping each other so as to overcome difficulties and creating a better life together.

 

这段历史见证了中华民族和犹太民族之间的深厚情谊。中国人和犹太人在一千多年前就开始了交往。众多犹太商人沿着古丝绸之路来华经商兴业，一些犹太人在中国定居，形成了当地犹太社区，与中国人民和睦相处，共建家园。中国也是世界上少数从未压迫、排挤过犹太民族的国家之一。二战中，中犹两个民族经历了相似的苦难，也结下了深厚的情谊。中国人民为数以万计的犹太人创造了一片生命绿洲，许多犹太人也与中国人民并肩抗击日本法西斯侵略，谱写了两个民族相互支持、患难与共的佳话。

The story of the Safe Haven in Shanghai demonstrated the profound friendship between the Chinese people and the Jewish people. The Chinese and the Jewish people have begun to engage and communicate with each other since more than a thousand years ago, many Jewish people have long since come to China along the Silk Road to do business, and some of them settling down in China, establishing Jewish communities and living in harmony with the local Chinese people. China is also one of the few countries in the world that has never oppressed or excluded the Jewish people. During World War II, the Chinese and Jewish people experienced similar sufferings and hardships and they forged a deep friendship. The Chinese people created an oasis of life for tens of thousands of Jews, and many Jewish people also fought side by side with the Chinese people against the Japanese fascist aggression, writing a touching chapter of the history featuring mutual support of our two peoples.

 

女士们，先生们，

Ladies and gentlemen,

 

和平来之不易，友谊历久弥新，历史启迪未来。当今世界并不太平，各种传统和非传统安全威胁此起彼伏。面对前所未有的挑战，各国人民只有相互尊重、和平共处、合作共赢，才能维护共同安全，创造持久和平，促进人类福祉。中国将始终秉持和平、发展、公平、正义、民主、自由的全人类共同价值，坚持和平发展、互利共赢，与各国一道构建人类命运共同体。

We believe that with the joint efforts, our friendship will grow stronger with time. We should also bear in mind that peace has not come easily and the past inspires the future. With various traditional and non-traditional security threats emerging one after another, the world today is not tranquil and peaceful. In the face of unprecedented challenges, no country can deal with them on its own. Only with mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation can the peoples of all countries preserve common security and long-term peace, promote the well-being of the whole mankind and prosper together. China will always uphold the universal values of peace, development, fairness, justice, democracy and freedom, adhere to the path of peaceful development, mutual benefit and win-win results, and work with other countries to build a community with a shared future for mankind.

 

中、美两国作为世界上最大的两个经济体和联合国安理会常任理事国，对世界和平与发展事业肩负着共同责任。中美合作能办成许多有利于两国人民和世界人民的大事，中美对抗冲突对两国和世界都是灾难。中美双方应共同努力，推动两国关系健康稳定发展。希望世界上所有善良的人们一道，携手向未来！

As the two largest economies in the world and permanent members of the UN Security Council, when China and the U.S. work together, they can make great things happen for the good of the people in both countries and the world at large; when they have serious problems or run into confrontation, it will definitely spell disaster for both sides and beyond. China and the U.S. should make joint efforts to promote the healthy and stable development of their bilateral relations. The Chinese people are willing to join hands with all friends and partners in the world and work together for a shared and beautiful future!
