Dear Friends:
很高兴出席中央广播电视总台欧洲总站“寻找新时代的破冰者”启动仪式。
It’s my pleasure to join you at the launch ceremony of the CMG project “To the Future Together”.
上世纪50年代，当冷战阴霾还笼罩世界的时候，以杰克·佩里先生为代表的英国企业家，冲破西方对新中国全面封锁的坚冰，开启了中英经贸关系的先河。从那时起，一代又一代“破冰者”接续奋斗，为推动中英关系发展作出了重要贡献。
In the 1950s, at the height of the Cold War, British entrepreneurs, represented by Mr Jack Perry, broke through Western blockade against New China and started the trade and economic partnership between China and the UK. Since then, generations of “icebreakers” have persisted in this endeavour to promote the growth of China-UK relations.
不久前，习近平主席向“破冰者”2022新春庆祝活动发来贺电。习主席充分肯定老一辈“破冰者”为中英关系发展作出的历史性贡献，并为两国有识之士在当前形势下拓展互利合作、促进中英友好指明了方向，使大家深受鼓舞。
Earlier this year, President Xi Jinping sent a message of congratulations to the “Icebreakers” 2022 Chinese New Year Celebration. President Xi commended the historic contribution of the first generation of “icebreakers” and showed the way forward for today’s visionary people from both countries in expanding the mutually-beneficial cooperation and deepening friendship between China and the UK. That was an encouraging message.
今年是中英建立大使级外交关系50周年。半个世纪以来，中英关系冲破各种干扰和障碍，取得历史性发展。历史清楚地表明，中英合作符合两国根本利益。中英国情不同，两国关系应遵循相互尊重、合作共赢的原则。
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial diplomatic relations between China and the UK. For half a century, this relationship has overcome various disruptions and obstacles, and made historic progress. History tells us that cooperation serves the fundamental interests of both China and the UK. Given their different national conditions, our bilateral relationship should follow the principle of mutual respect and win-win cooperation.
站在新的历史起点上，我们更需要发扬“破冰精神”。
Today, as we stand at the new historical juncture, it is all the more important for us to emulate the “icebreaking” spirit. It is my hope that visionary people from our two countries will answer the call of President Xi Jinping, take over the baton from the old generation of “icebreakers”.
希望两国有识之士积极响应习近平主席的号召，接过老一辈“破冰者”的接力棒。双方要加深了解，减少误解，增进互信。要妥善处理分歧，尊重彼此核心利益。要加强各层级对话，鼓励两国人民交往，积极拓展各领域合作。要从过去50年中汲取智慧，为未来中英关系行稳致远不懈努力。
We should work together to enhance mutual understanding, reduce misperception and increase mutual trust. We should handle our differences properly and respect each other’s core interests. We should strengthen dialogue at all levels, encourage people-to-people exchanges, and explore ways to broaden cooperation wherever possible. We should draw inspiration from the past 50 years and work tirelessly for the sound and steady development of China-UK relations in the years to come.
希望大家都勇做“破冰者”和“架桥者”。让我们携起手来，开辟中英关系更加美好的未来，这不仅符合两国根本利益，而且有利于促进世界的和平、稳定与繁荣。
I hope that you will all become icebreakers and bridge builders. Let’s join hands to create a better future for China-UK relations together. By doing so, we will not only serve the fundamental interests of our two countries, but also help promote peace, stability and prosperity of the world.
