begin

开始

 

表示“begin（开始）+动作”时，此“动作”可用不定式或动名词表示。句式：begin to do sth或begin doing sth。

 

①如上述“动作”是有意识的,用不定式和动名词都可以。

【例】The manufacturers began to dispatch [dispatching] the goods on March 6.

3月6日工厂开始发运货物。

 

②如上述“动作”是表示“感情”或“思想活动”的，则通常用不定式。

【例】When we declined their offer, they began to realize [understand] that their prices were too high.

当我们拒绝报盘时，他们开始意识到[理解到]他们的价格太高了。

 

③句中主语是“物”，不是“人”时，begin后多用不定式。

【例】We prefer to wait till the excitement of the market begins to tone down.

我们宁愿等到市场波动开始稳定时再说。

 

④在be beginning后面，多接用不定式。例如:

【例】Now we are beginning to work against time to get the goods ready.

现在我们要开始争取时间将货物准备好。

外贸英语中多用以表示“月初”“上旬”。

【例】The goods will be ready for shipment at the beginning of next month.

货物可于下月初备好待运。

 

behalf

①on [in] behalf of，on one’s behalf代表，为了

【例】We wish to thank you on behalf of the end-users.

我们愿代表用户向你方致谢。

 

②美国英语，常用in代替on behalf of等习语中的on

【例】If the firm is not known to you, will you please be good enough to conduct an investigation in our behalf.

如你们对该公司并不熟悉，则请代替我们进行调查。

 

③on behalf of与for意思相同，但on behalf of为正式用语。为加强语气，for与on behalf of往往并用。
