6 Amazing Reasons to Read More

Nicole Obre

I’ve always been a reader. I was that kid who was constantly getting busted for reading under the blankets past bedtime with a flashlight. In college, I initially wanted to major in literature. It seemed like a great way to read more books. Now that I’m a gasp! grownup, with a family, real responsibilities, and a job, reading has been pushed to the back burner. There never seems to be time for it during the day, so it’s become a before-bed thing. But I’m so wiped at the end of each day, I never seem to make it five pages into a book before my eyelids start drooping.

So, I’m trying to schedule myself a mini reading break in each day. Because not only is reading something I really enjoy, but it also comes with a surprising amount of benefits. To help remind myself why reading is so good for us, here are six amazing reasons to read more.

Expands Your Vocabulary

It’s inevitable. The more you read, the more words you brain is exposed to, and they’ll find a way to start popping into your everyday vocabulary. Being articulate and well-spoken can boost your self-confidence and your self-esteem, and maybe even your career – depending on your profession.

Improves Your Focus and Concentration

Reading a book takes 100 percent of your attention. Everything else disappears as you immerse yourself in the story. And in our everything-instant, internet-crazy world, that doesn’t happen very often. Reading is one thing you definitely can’t do while you’re on your phone at the same time. Practising this type of focus while reading can help strengthen your focus at work, or in other areas of your life.

Boosts Your Imagination

You’re never too old to use your imagination and reading is a great way to do it. When you’re reading a world described in a book, your mind is actively creating an image for it in your head. You’re picturing your very own own version of what the characters look like and what their voices sound like. How cool is that?

Reduces Stress and Helps You Relax

Reading can be a great stress reliever. Some studies suggest that reading for just a few minutes can slow down your heart rate and ease tension in your muscles. Forget the pricey massage and pick up a free book from the library!

Improves Your Memory

Most books come with a whole bunch of characters, locations, history, and sub-plots. And you have to remember them all. Thankfully, our brains are pretty incredible and they some amazing things. Every new memory you create forges new pathways in your brain and strengthens

It’s Entertaining

Ever find yourself staying up later for just one more chapter? A good book comes with serious entertainment value. And did I mention it can also be free entertainment? Yes, I have a slightly problem with buying more books than I have shelves for, but you don’t have to buy a book to read it. Check out your local library for endless reading options. Most libraries also have books available in PDF or ePUB form so you can view them on your e-reader, iPad, or computer screen.

Whether you’re into fantasy, romance, or thrillers, there’s a genre out there for everyone. So pick up a book, and see if you can set yourself aside a little reading time each day. I’ll be doing the same!
