①经常接用by。

【例】Please feel assured that we will abide by our promise.

②状语修饰语可置于abide与by之间。

【例】We will abide strictly by the stipulations in our contract.

ability

（体力上的或智力上的）能力

①常接用动词不定式，不能接用of +动名词，如常说ability to do sth，不说ability of doing sth。

【例】 We should be grateful to you if you could get some information for us concerning their credit standing and their ability to conduct business.

如你方能代为了解他们的资信情况与经营能力，我们将不胜感激。

②ability的复数形式abilities只指智力，不指体力。

【例】He is a man of manifold abilities.

他是个多才多艺的人。

③to the best of one’s ability尽最大努力

【例】We wish to take this opportunity to reassure you of our readiness to cooperate with you to the best of our ability at all times.

我们愿借此机会重申，我们将尽最大努力随时与你方合作。

能够的，能干的

①多用作表语，后面接用不定式。

【例】We shall be able to place an order with you next month.

下个月我们可向你方提出订货。

②be able to、be competent to接用动词不定式时，不定式不可用被动语态；be capable不可接用不定式，可接用of +动名词或名词。

【例】Who is able to correct the mistakes in the credit?
