5 Adventurous Apps That Could Help Lose Weight

Get outside and explore with these five cool and fun apps that involve exercising in the outdoors. From running from zombies to becoming a sci-fi hero, this list has something for everyone!

1. Zombies, Run!

If you love zombies, there will never be a more fun way for you to get some exercise. The Zombies, Run! app makes you escape “zombies” through various interactive and physically challenging exercises. There are over three million members who have experienced the thrill of this game.

How does it work?

A lot of the time you will be walking, jogging, or sprinting to a destination. This could be on the beach, at a park, or just on a trail. If you can’t get outdoors, you can also use the app while working out on a treadmill. While playing the game, you can complete many story-based missions. Typically, they make you collect supplies, build shelters, and run from zombies.

The cool thing is that whenever a zombie noise starts, you have to start sprinting to get away from them. So there’s a lot of stop-and-go, which makes it more like high-intensity interval training.

If you play with a couple of friends, you can work together to build your shelter. Sometimes you even have to rescue friends from zombies. Then you can share your experience online with your friends. If you get the pro version of the game you’ll even have access to 240+ story-based missions.

2. BattleSuit Runner Fitness

This is a truly epic running game that even those that don’t like zombies will love. It’s a running (or walking/jogging) story adventure app. When playing it, you have to go through a sci-fi adventure story. In your missions, you have to do different stretching and resistance training exercises.

How well you do impacts how your character does in the virtual game. You can use your own songs to influence the storyline of the game. To make progress you must follow the instructions. This usually involves traveling to certain GPS-based locations that get marked for you.

The app comes with a voiceover from your instructor that narrates where you need to go and why. You’ll even hear about enemies you need to avoid along the way.

Here’s an excerpt from a real mission:

“I’m uploading the high bunker coordinates to your navigation hut now. Its location is a modest run from your current location. Your orders are to approach the bunker on foot, infiltrate it and neutralize all (inaudible) pods that you encounter.”

There are a few times when you have to make a decision that will impact what happens next in your mission. For example, you might have to bring hostages to a safe zone or you could have to chase down an enemy by sprinting.

The really cool part comes when you encounter enemies, which are aliens that you fight against. You can earn iridium by completing missions to strengthen your suit. This will make you stronger when in combat with an enemy.

3. AllTrails

If you like biking or hiking on trails, then the AllTrails app is a must.

It gives you a list of trails, based on their location, which you can conquer on foot or by bike. There are more than 50,000 in their database inNorth America, and the app has over three million users.

You can even use this app without draining your phone’s data!

The cool thing is that you can use this app while offline. Since a lot of trails don’t have the best wireless signal, this is a huge plus. Even without internet access, you can complete a full tracking over GPS of the route (aka the trail) you took. Yet the offline mode is only available to pro members.

The app also allows users to upload pictures they take while on the trail so others who look at the trail can see them too. Are you a photographer? You can make a little portfolio out of all the beautiful pictures you take while on each of the trails you visit.

4. Pokemon GO

Pokemon GO has been news headlines for a few weeks. It’s a phone app that allows you to catch Pokemon characters and train them at local gym locations. Then you can go to another local area to have them fight at a battle arena.

This game is really cool and super fun for Pokemon fanatics. There’s an incentive to exercise, since the characters get spaced throughout the city. The gyms and battle arenas are also located in different areas.

Augmented reality apps like Pokemon GO create a new dynamic for technology lovers. It allows them to interact with the real world while still enjoying a digital one. The environments usually don’t mix well, but with Pokemon GO you can have fun and get moving at the same time!

5. Superhero Workout

If you don’t always have time to get outside, the Superhero Workout is an app you could use both indoors and out. It is created by the makers of Zombies, Run! Further, most of the gameplay is comparable to the original 7 Minute Workout.

So, how does it work?

You’re set up with the responsibility to save the world. To do this you have to get and upgrade weapons, shields, and more. This could be done by completing more and more workouts. There’s the traditional seven-minute workout, specialty body weight routines and even circuit training programs.

Working out in your house? You can use your phone as a motion-tracking device to watch yourself as you perform the exercises. If you synchronize the phone with your TV, it’s possible to watch yourself complete missions in the “game” as you do them. You can get a great full body burn from this app!
